My First Time

Friday night was "my first time"...nocturnal painting, that is! Oh, what fun! So much goes into painting at night. First, you gather your light sources. Headlamps, book lights, flash lights, glow sticks, anything that lights up. Next you look for a location with interesting lights. Then you find a friend who is willing to do it with you (after all, you don't want to be alone in the dark! Thanks Kay and Chip).

As part of a 2 day paintout at Wrightsville Beach sponsored by the museum there, I decided to try my first nocturnal painting. I gathered my lights, scouted locations and enlisted the friends who were game to join in. After painting all day on Friday, Kay and I met for an early dinner close to our chosen location. At dusk, we set up our easels and sketched in the composition. As the sun set, we put on our head lamps and attempted to mix colors that resembled the night. We attracted attention from all sort of folks...2 (not young) ladies with lights shining out of their foreheads...HAHAHA! What a sight!

As we struggled to see what colors we were mixing and remarking how difficult it was, Chip shows up...and shows us how it's really done. He pulls his car in next to mine, sets up his easel and lights. Boys and their toys, he has a daylight OTT light attached to a battery pack! No wonder he could see what he was doing. He had also toned his canvas red. I learned a lot for next time.

Will there be a next time? Maybe, someday!
